Subject: Perl vs Icon

Real world problem here. Perl vs Icon. On a given unix system
I've been using Icon quite successfully for:
o Scripting
o Small programs and utilities
o Data conversions
Mostly in the role of system admin. However, some new backup
sys admins have been brought on and their recommendation is
to scrap this Icon stuff and standardize on Perl, because :
o They know Perl
o They don't know Icon
o Thousands of sys admins can't be wrong
o There's two of them and one of me
o They're closer to the CIO than I am
And so I find myself on the defensive. I don't want to start
flaming and look like a raving fanatic in mgt eyes, but has
anyone been through such a coup? And is there any advice or
or layout of reason I could use defense of Icon. Right now,
all I have to offer is years of reliable running (but Perl
has that on some other systems too), and that I've written
over 100 programs to support this particular system. I've
also developed my own software chip library, in addition to
the IPL, and that helps a lot with productivity and code reuse.
I am already aware of one answer, "Learn Perl, it's a marketable trade."
No sweat, it probably can be mastered in a weekend with a good manual, but
my goal is to defend Icon, and maybe uplift the consciousness of some.
Even though I think my real problem is politics.
